Kaleidoscope sponsors Opsnizing Dad – the opera

To celebrate random acts of kindness day, we’re giving a very lucky person (plus a guest) complimentary access to performances by The Wallace Collection for a whole year.

Kaleidoscope is supporting OperaLab to produce an original one-act opera based on the short story ‘Opsnizing Dad’.

The original story, written by Elizabeth Ingram Wallace, won the Writing the Future science fiction competition hosted by Kaleidoscope in 2017. The competition asked writers to imagine what health and healthcare might look like in 2100. Opsnizing Dad is a darkly comic look at the complex relationships people have with preserving memories.

Now renowned international trumpet soloist, composer and conductor John Wallace is producing the opera. It will be performed and live streamed on Wednesday 9 March.

The aim is to develop a new, dramatic musical work and provide opportunities for young musicians to get experience in the production and performance of new material. The work will feature singers including renowned Scottish tenor Jamie MacDougall with period brass and percussion.

It is a real joy to see this story inspire such a fantastic project. When we hosted ‘Writing the Future’ we wanted to find stories that would excite people. We were blown away by Opsnizing Dad, it’s original, powerful, funny, touching and tragic. Seeing it bring people together again through music is a beautiful thing.
