Organisational development
We help organisations to thrive and adapt, so you can do more of your best work in the face of uncertainty and complexity – now and in the future.
Organisations, like people, don’t always operate at their best. Even the good ones. There are constant demands on organisations to change and improve, especially in healthcare. But organisational change is hard, and when it is done badly it can be damaging – for morale, for productivity, for effectiveness.
Our approach
Our approach to organisational development is based on a deep understanding of change that works. It focuses on how three factors can be shaped so your people and partners can thrive in achieving your shared purpose. These factors are:
- strategic – what are we trying to achieve and why?
- operational – how do we organise ourselves and the work for best effect?
- cultural – what kind of environment do we need to design and do the work in if we are to succeed and thrive?
For us, the purpose of great OD is to build your capability and capacity in these three areas so you can adapt and develop in any circumstances, and continue to do this in the future.
We don’t promise ‘transformation tomorrow’ – instead, we provide an evidence-based, social and applied approach to the hard (but possible) work of change.
Our method is based on academic and industry research but our approach is relational. We meet organisations where they are, and empower their people, partners and communities to work together for best effect in their unique context. And, most importantly, we create a partnership with you to build your collective ownership for lasting and positive change, so you can keep on improving.
Our services
We work in partnership with clients and provide particular expertise in:
- Vision and purpose: we co-develop a compelling and credible vision and purpose that motivates your people and partners.
- Values and behaviours: we turn organisational vision and strategy into values and observable behaviours, including co-developing behavioural frameworks.
- High performing teams: we draw on our evidence-based framework to support professional teams to achieve high performance.
- Organisational change: we develop programmes that address the strategic, operational and cultural factors outlined above.
- Culture change: we define, measure and improve culture – ensuring your culture doesn’t eat your strategy for breakfast.
- Leadership development: we work with system and organisation leaders to equip them with the capacity and capability to lead effectively through complexity.
- Theory of change: we use our expertise in research and development, and our understanding of how change really happens, to establish a robust theory of change framework to maximise your efforts and investment.
- Impact and evaluation: we are committed to understanding and demonstrating transparently what does and does not work in your context.
Our experience
We have supported organisations across the health and care sector to improve and maintain a culture of continuous improvement. Our experience includes:
- Co-designing a large scale, cross functional development programme over 12 months with a newly-formed NHS planning and commissioning directorate
- Delivering a short two-day team development workshop with Macmillan North of England partnerships team.
- Supporting the North London Mental Health Partnership to be a great place to work by co-developing a people and organisational development strategy, a values and behaviours Framework and a leadership framework for both clinical and non-clinical leaders.
- Partnering with South East London Integrated Care System during its journey from six clinical commissioning groups to its operating model today, including ongoing Board, executive team, programme, place and system leadership development.
- Working with Sussex Partnership Foundation NHS Trust to develop executive, senior leadership and clinical and care professional leadership as well as a new internal OD operating model.
- Working with Barts Health NHS Trust to evaluate their culture change model so they could continue to test the impact on culture and inclusivity with confidence.
For the last five years, Kaleidoscope has been at our side for every step of our development journey. From supporting our Board to developing our clinical leaders and new collaborative ways of working, Kaleidoscope has helped us transition to the integrated care system world in a way few others could match. We’ve greatly appreciated both what they’ve done but also the way they’ve done it.
Andrew Bland, Chief Executive Officer, South East London Integrated Care System
