Rachael Mather outlines her questions and explains her reasons for them.

Questions

  1. If the person you were supporting was your mother or father, what would you do to help them?
  2. If you were receiving health and /or social care services, what would you want to receive?
  3. What else could you do, or who else could you involve to support this person and provide the very best care for them?

Why these?

As my mum’s carer, I want the very best for her. I want professionals to see her as a person, not a nuisance. If we imagine everyone we care for is our own loved one, surely that will improve the support they receive.

About me

I’ve worked in the NHS for nine years, supporting patient involvement  and participation. I’m part of the national experience and partnerships team. I’m a carer for my mum who has significant health and care needs following a stroke five years ago. Every single day I witness the impact of health and care services and professionals’ determination to provide the very best care.

If we imagine everyone we care for is our own loved one, surely that will improve the support they receive.
