Understanding organisational effectiveness at NHS Sussex
We helped NHS Sussex understand their organisational effectiveness by gathering insights from stakeholders across their system, creating an evidence base to strengthen their leadership capability.
The challenge
NHS Sussex integrated care board needed a comprehensive understanding of their organisational effectiveness to strengthen their leadership capability. They required a systematic approach to gather perspectives from both internal staff and external system partners, but lacked the methodology and capacity to undertake this analysis themselves.
Our approach
We designed a multi-phase approach that captured perspectives from across NHS Sussex’s system.
- We began by gathering feedback from 14 of their external system partners through a qualitative survey to understand how NHS Sussex was perceived as a system leader.
- We then expanded the survey to NHS Sussex staff, using a mixed-methods survey with their wider leadership team and gathering input from all staff through using a digital survey tools.
- We synthesised insights from more than 400 stakeholders across three distinct groups – external partners, senior leaders, and all staff – to create a comprehensive picture of organisational effectiveness.
This robust approach ensured we captured both internal and external perspectives, providing NHS Sussex with a robust evidence base for improvement.
Our impact
Our work delivered both immediate insights and longer-term strategic benefits for NHS Sussex.
They gained a comprehensive, evidence-based understanding of their organisational effectiveness from multiple perspectives – something they had not had previously.
Our findings enabled NHS Sussex to develop targeted improvement workstreams focusing on enhancing their development offer, increasing organisational clarity, and strengthening communication with system partners. These recommendations were grounded in robust data rather than assumptions.
The insights continue to inform NHS Sussex’s strategic decisions, helping them strengthen their effectiveness in reducing health inequalities and improving outcomes for Sussex residents.
Working with Kaleidoscope gave NHS Sussex the organisational insight we needed. Their approach to gathering feedback from stakeholders provided us with a solid evidence base. They were able to turn complex data into clear, actionable recommendations that informed our improvement priorities. Their team understood our challenges as an integrated care board and delivered practical analysis that helped us make strategic decisions about how we operate and serve Sussex residents.
