Kaleidoscope’s role in new clean air zone toolkit to tackle air pollution

New guide draws on decades of global experience to show how more cities could effectively tackle air pollution through clean air zones.

18 February 2025

The guidance was compiled on behalf of the Clean Air Fund by independent researchers and planning experts at Arup, with support from Kaleidoscope Health and Care and the International Council on Clean Transportation.

Kaleidoscope conducted a series of research interviews with officials from cities around the world who had already considered or implemented a clean air zone. The insights from these interviews played a crucial role in developing the guidance.

Lasting impact

Sarah Moir, who led Kaleidoscope’s work on the project, said: “We’re very proud to have contributed to such an important piece of work that we hope has a lasting impact on health outcomes around the world.”

Kaleidoscope’s research and evaluation approach combines traditional and innovative methodologies with our expertise in delivering insights and learning. We have supported a range of evaluation and impact initiatives across all aspects of health and care.

Need for urgent action

‘Clean Air Zones: Practical guidance for cities’ highlights the need for urgent action by local leaders. By 2050, seven out of ten people will be living in cities and breathing air that is dangerous to their health.

Aimed at city leaders, mayors and officials, the report provides practical guidance on how to design effective measures to protect residents and gain the social, economic and health benefits of clean air.

It reflects expert review of best practices, an in-depth literature review, and insights from interviews, workshops and roundtables from cities from the Global South and North.
