Impact London Community of Practice

The Impact London community is a multi-disciplinary group of health and care leaders from across London. We come together to create solutions to entrenched problems, share learnings, and work towards a kinder and more connected health and care leadership environment.

What we’re doing

Impact London is a community of practice for leaders with a clinical or care professional background. We are exploring how professional leadership can offer a unique set of approaches to challenges in population health and wellbeing, such as health inequality. We will also be reflecting on the theory and practice of professional leadership itself.

Our events are held in a workshop format. Each event encourages the sharing of learning and best practice, collaboration and problem-solving through a multi-disciplinary lens.

As well as events, we will be creating a pool of resources from the community’s members, encouraging conversations, development, and learning outside of the workshops.

Where we’ve come from

The clinical leadership landscape across London is changing. Proposed legislation will mark an important next step towards system working and care integration. This offers an opportunity to enhance the diversity and inclusivity of clinical and care professionals involved in system leadership.

As we move through this period of transition we are keen to maintain a space for those involved or interested in systems leadership to come together as peers, learn from each other and systems elsewhere, and collectively understand and address some of the challenges of bringing about change in a complex system.

We began in summer 2021, when the five then-CCG chairs came together once a week to discuss their challenges, share their experiences and ultimately support one another. It emerged that there was a need for this type of space to continue.

To delve deeper into what was really needed and how we might get there, we formed a core group of about 20 people from different regions, roles, and perspectives. After a lot of thinking about what leadership means to each of us, and the behaviours and values we want the community to exhibit, we created what is now the Impact London Community of Practice.

Who we are

We include clinicians, nurses, managers, policy makers, psychologists and a whole load of other roles from across health and care. At the heart of the community is diversity – both in our characteristics, but also from the perspectives we bring in our different roles, leadership styles and lived experiences of the sector.

What unites us all is our dedication to improve and develop the system that we serve, and our desire to connect and collaborate with our colleagues to do this.

Multidisciplinary membership means that the community will contain members who also hold substantive roles in the ICS and in clinical networks, and members who don’t. These two groups complement each other and collaborate to solve problems: those who sit outside the management structures can take risks but have little power; those who sit within structures have less freedom of movement but more power.
