Our work

We want to enable an environment where clinical and care professional system leadership in south east London is a rewarding, positive and joyful experience. We want to support leaders to work across boundaries throughout the system and help them to develop, learn and thrive.

Throughout our engagement we have understood there is a strong desire to build a community of leaders across south east London who can come together to build relationships across the system, share learning and expertise and access learning and development support.  Our learning from other systems shows that a community of this kind cannot be sustained on its own and a dedicated capability is necessary to support this level of transformation.

Working with south east London leaders, we have developed a proposal and recommendations for an SEL Systems Leadership Academy to provide this capability.

SEL Systems Leadership Academy

The Academy will develop systems leaders in every part of our health and care system. It will support them to:

  • work across organisational and professional boundaries
  • share learning and expertise
  • access learning and development support
  • make a difference to the health and wellbeing of local people and communities in south east London.

It will work with partners and existing resources including training hubs, professional networks, academic and provider organisations, local authorities and AHSNs among others to achieve this.

We have identified three core areas of focus for the Academy based on the work strands recommended by SEL system leaders in our first phase of engagement:

  • Leadership: delivering applied leadership learning and development programmes to empower innovative current and new system leaders.
  • Innovation: encouraging and supporting a culture of leadership for innovation and improvement.
  • Community: developing a supporting community of systems leaders which is inclusive, diverse and connected.

Priority groups for system leadership development have been identified by extensive mapping of existing leadership development activities across south east London.

Provisional name

While we are using a provisional title of SEL Systems Leadership Academy, we do not think that this name conveys our ambition to create a safe space and an inclusive community. We hope to continue to develop its name and identity with a broader group.

We want to ensure the ‘Systems Leadership Academy’ is co-designed with the community it serves, and would like to invite you to get involved in the next phase of development.

Next steps

We are now focusing on the launch and delivery of the Academy and would like to hear from anyone involved or interested in systems leadership.

Together, we will test our work so far, determine the values and capabilities that make up a south east London leader, and co-design the areas of work and programmes for the Systems Leadership Academy.

We’re launching the first south east London Community of Practice for health and care professionals involved or interested in systems leadership.
